Therapy

Family therapy across Michigan, by video

Every family hits stretches where it feels like no one's hearing each other. Family therapy gives everyone a chance to be heard.

Whether it's constant conflict, a hard transition, a child who's struggling or a loss the whole family is carrying, we'll help you understand what's happening between you, not just inside one person.

Sessions are by video, so your family can join from home, anywhere in Michigan.

How we approach it

Our family sessions focus on communication and on the patterns a family falls into together. We're strengths-based, so we look for what's already working and build on it, with practical tools you can use at home.

Therapy takes some effort from everyone involved. Small, consistent changes in how you talk and respond to each other can lead to real growth and healthier relationships.

Our family therapists in Michigan include Karen Copeland, who has over 40 years of experience in hospital and outpatient settings and works with adults, couples and families. Hanna Newton, our founder, has more than 12 years of experience with kids, adults, couples and families.

Our virtual Parent Behavior Management Training group is led by licensed therapists, and it's for you as a parent: you learn ways to handle behavior at home, with other parents who get it.

What to expect

Email us with who'd be coming, a little about what's going on and how to reach you. We'll match you with a clinician who works with families. Appointments are often available within the week.

Sessions are by video. Your clinician will talk with you about who joins which sessions as the work goes on.

You don't need everyone on board before you reach out.

If your teen is 14 or older, Michigan law lets them start therapy on their own. Under the Michigan Mental Health Code (MCL 330.1707), a minor 14 or older can consent to outpatient mental health services without a parent's consent, for up to 12 sessions or 4 months per request.

Questions

Does the whole family have to come to every session?

Not always. Your clinician will talk with you about who joins which sessions, depending on what you're working on.

Can parents get support on their own?

Yes. Along with family sessions, we offer parenting support and a virtual Parent Behavior Management Training group.

Do you take insurance for family therapy?

We take 13 insurance plans and will confirm your copayment with your insurer before the first session. Self-pay is available, with a sliding scale if needed.

Can family therapy be done online?

Yes. Under the Michigan Public Health Code (MCL 333.16284), a health professional can't provide a telehealth service without getting consent for treatment, so you'll give that consent before video sessions begin.

If you are in danger right now, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room.
